The Port of Baltimore was established in 1709, and the town of Baltimore was founded in 1729. For much of its history, Baltimore served as a vital port for the tobacco and sugar industries. The completion of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) railroad further cemented Baltimore as a hub of commerce in the Mid-Atlantic region. Though the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 destroyed more than 1,500 buildings, the city was quickly rebuilt.

Severn is an unincorporated community within the Baltimore metropolitan area. Around 45,000 people live in Severn, and more than 2.7 million people live in the greater Baltimore area. Baltimore is known as the home of the prestigious Johns Hopkins University and the National Aquarium, which is the most popular tourist destination in Maryland. The Port of Baltimore is still one of the country's largest ports.
